Maypole magic in the Upper Palatinate

When tradition and the joy of spring unite

14/04/2026

In early May, a festive spirit fills the area around Parsberg, bringing living tradition, joyful gatherings, and a towering maypole.

When spring arrives in the Upper Palatinate, the lead-up to May Day brings a special kind of anticipation. In villages across the region, people turn their attention to one of the season’s most cherished traditions: the maypole.

The maypole usually comes from the nearby forest – often a spruce or fir, carefully selected, felled, and prepared for its grand appearance. Its green crown remains at the top, while wreaths, ribbons, and hand-painted signs decorate the trunk below. These often reflect traditional crafts, local coats of arms, and stories of village life. And, of course, the classic Bavarian colours of blue and white are never missing.

One of the most impressive moments is the raising of the maypole. In many places, helpers still raise it by hand, using long wooden poles to lift the trunk upright step by step. With focused faces, shouted instructions, and a sense of shared excitement, the maypole slowly rises into the sky. Once it is standing tall, the celebrations can begin.

And that is when things usually become even more lively. In some places, young locals keep watch over the maypole through the night, as neighbouring communities may try to steal it. If they succeed, they usually only return the tree in exchange for a hearty snack or a keg of beer. What may sound playful is in fact a long-standing part of village life – one that has connected communities for generations.

In the days around the maypole festival, the village gathers to celebrate. Brass band music drifts across the square, while hearty specialities and cool drinks are served. The tradition of the maypole dates to the 15th century and symbolises abundance, community, and joie de vivre to this day.

If you visit us in Parsberg in early May, you may get to experience this special atmosphere for yourself. When the maypole stands watch over the village, spring reveals its most sociable side.
