Zwiefachentag in the Upper Palatinate
Dance, music, and living tradition
20/05/2026
One step, two beats – and before you know it, you are right in the heart of the Upper Palatinate’s living dance tradition.
Come check out Zwiefachentag, and you’ll notice it straight away: here, you don’t simply watch from the sidelines – you become part of the experience! Zwiefachentag is a one-day cultural festival that has been held in various towns across the Upper Palatinate since 2018. In 2026, it will take place in Hemau, around 15 minutes by car from the Romantik Hotel Hirschen. At the heart of it all is the Zwiefache, a distinctive form of dance and music from eastern Bavaria and the Bohemian border region.
And it all comes down to rhythm. The Zwiefache is full of variety: at times a waltz, at times a turning dance, sometimes both in quick succession – but always a lively interplay of tempo and feeling that draws you in, step by step.
There is no need to worry, though: no one is thrown in the deep end. In relaxed dance workshops, experienced instructors show you how to find the right steps. Before long, you will be conquering the dance floor with confidence.
But Zwiefachentag is about far more than just dancing. Throughout the day, a varied programme invites you to make music, sing, listen, or simply stroll through the town and soak up the atmosphere. Instrument workshops, communal singing, concerts, and smaller performances turn the day into a lively cultural experience. Whether in the town hall, the market square, or the inn, you’ll find something new to discover.
What makes the day so special? Everyone comes together: young dancers, seasoned musicians, and curious visitors alike. Generations share the same space and celebrate a tradition that has been alive for centuries – and has been recognised as part of Germany’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016.
And you? You are right in the heart of the Upper Palatinate’s living culture. Whether you’re in search of new impressions, genuine encounters, or memorable moments. And who knows – by the end of the day, you may well have become a star of the dance floor yourself.
